Dutch Tradition: Poached Pears

Looking for a typical traditional Dutch recipe in autumn style? Make yourself a skillet of juicy and tasty poached pears ('Stoofpeertjes' in Dutch') with SweetLife syrup and white port. They’re perfect as part of a dessert but also match with savoury dishes. Just try them and find out your preferred pairing! Prep time: 20 minutes

Cook time: 90 minutes

Servings: 6 persons

Equipment: large skillet pan with lid, preferably cast iron

Ingredients:

  • • 1,5 kg cooking pears, for example Gieser Wildemann
  • • 175 grams SweetLife St. John’s Bread Syrup (a.k.a. Johannesbrood Siroop / Carob Syrup )
  • • 0,5 l white port
  • • Lemon peel of 1 lemon

Preparation:

  1.  Peel the cooking pears and leave the stem attached.
  2.  Put them straight up in the skillet pan and poor in the SweetLife syrup, white port.
  3.  Add the lemon peel and add water until the pears are covered.
  4.  Bring it to a boil, reduce the heat to very low and let it poach for 90 minutes.
  5.  Remove the cooking pears from the pan and boil down the sauce to a third of the volume.
  6.  Keep the pears and sauce in a container in the fridge.
